Many of us have now ridden these waves, and have started looking at picking up new hobbies- and if you chose to take up embroidery, you're in the right place to help you find the perfect machine to maximise your hobby.

We've collated a comprehensive guide to the top five embroidery machines to help you find the perfect machine. Read on for our recommendations, with an overview of each.

1) Brother FS100WT Free-Motion Embroidery and Quilting Machine

The top product on this list is the Brother FS100WT; an expensive yet highly feature-rich option for your embroidery. These electronic embroidery machines are capable of stitching in 100 different special stitch patterns, as well as a quilting function- You get a sewing machine, embroidery machine, and quilting machine all in one!

Read on to see what we love about this machine (this can be used as an industrial machine too).

What We Love

  • 100 Different Stitch Designs! The best thing about this computerised embroidery machine is that it offers you a vast array of 100 different stitch designs, including braids, leaves, florals, criss-cross designs, swirls, ribbons, stars, and much more. You get a balanced combination of both utility and decorative stitches, so you can personalise your creations completely as you wish
  • Lettering Functionality: These embroidery machines feature a lettering function that allows you add beautiful, cursive text to your projects and add a further personalised touch to your creations- this feature was tested out by our textiles professionals who verified the quality of the stitch signatures, you'll get your money's worth when buying this embroidery sewing machine- for sure

[aawp fields="B00LVS9A1U" value="thumb" image_size="large" image="2"]

  • Extension Table and Quilting Foot: You can work on projects as large as bedding and curtains with the FS100WT high-quality embroidery machine, as it includes a handy integrated extension table. The free-motion quilting food is a key aspect in giving you a smoother free-hand embroidery and/or quilting experience
  • Electronic Feedback Display: These advanced machines feature an electronic LCD display which informs you of which foot type is required for each stitch, as well as stitch width and length manipulation- all controlled with 4 buttons
  • Easy Needle Threading: Threading the needle and setting up the bobbin is perhaps the most tedious task involved in stitching. This computerized embroidery machine makes your life easier with the integrated automatic needle threading system- the quick-set drop-in bobbin mechanism also prevents thread jamming too, reducing the stresses associated with fiddly threads

The Verdict

While these amazing machines aren't the most affordable machine option (they are expensive machines), we recommend the Brother FS100WT embroidery machines for all kinds of tasks, including dressmaking, quilting, duvet/bedding creation, or even home furnishings (sofas, seats). The larger table width allows you to tackle larger projects on it, making it ideal for both home and commercial use.

[aawp fields="B00LVS9A1U" value="thumb" image_size="large" image="3"]

The automatic bobbin winder, needle threader, and quick-set drop-in bobbin system are great additions to make your life a little easier, so you can spend more time embroidering, rather than setting up your machine. You can also great a wide variety of items, with the 7 by 1 step button holes. There's even a lettering function- which is something you can expect in luxury machines, you can create amazing lettered titles and names with this function, making it an excellent choice/popular choice for hobbyists!

This machine ticks all the boxes, however, it is unsuitable for people on a limited budget- but don't worry, we've got sewing machines for every budget range on this page!

Here's a quick overview of this machine, which may or not be your dream machine by now:

  • 100 stitch designs; utility and decorative
  • Extra-large table/space to sew
  • Integrated needle threader
  • Quick-set drop-in bobbin system prevents bunching/jamming
  • LCD display and 4-button stitch width/length control
  • Various foot types: Zig Zag (on the machine), blind hem, overcasting, buttonhole, and monogramming - with a foot control included in your purchase
  • Needles and a guidance DVD included in your purchase to give you ideas in stitching

2) Uten - Portable Electric Multi-Function Machine

Next on our list we've got the Uten portable electric multi-functional machine. This is still an expensive, but cheaper option in place of the Brother FS100WT. In fact, this machine actually offers greater variety in some areas- the only thing is that you won't be benefiting from renowned Brother quality, who've been experts in the field for years.

[aawp fields="B08PZ621JB" value="thumb" image_size="large" image="1"]

Uten machines are, however, a great option for anyone who isn't willing to spend so much on a sewing machine, but are looking for high-end features in their machine.

Read on to see what we love about this machine.

What We Love

  • Various Styles: This computerized sewing machine by Uten features 200 different stitch styles integrated, as well as 8, one-step style buttonholes to select from! With this large variety of design options (utility and decorative stitches included), you can create all sorts of beautiful designs without the need for traditional hand-driven embroidery.
  • Extra-Large Table and Presser Feet Options: This universal machine features an extra-large extendable table, so you can tackle larger projects with ease. Additionally, you get various presser feet options to convert this sewing machine into an apt machine for sewing, machine for monogramming, and machine for embroidery.

[aawp fields="B08PZ621JB" value="thumb" image_size="large" image="2"]

  • Buttons for Easier Usage: There is a range of different button controls to help you quickly access key controls. These include a stop/start button, which allows for automated sewing (without the need to use the foot control); a reverse stitch button to help you reinforce your seams and secure the ends of fabrics; an up/down needle setting; a maximum stitch speed-slider control to help set the maximum stitch speed (a higher speed per minute is difficult to control, we recommend starting with a lower stitching speed if you're a beginner); and a tension control to adjust the stitch tension
  • LCD Display: This type of embroidery machine also features an extra-large LCD display with handy navigation controls/buttons to allow you to ensure all of your desired settings are in order before starting your project. On the screen, you can control the stitch length and width, presser foot (with recommended type), tension, needle position, and other useful controls. The screen also feeds back a visual aid and auditory signal to inform you of any errors too, which is handy if you find it difficult to troubleshoot with machines.
  • Ease of Use: This machine makes your life really easy with various handy features that you can't actually get with cheaper machines, including - a quick-set drop-in bobbin system (like the Brother FS100WT); a free arm for sleeves and cuffs; an automatic integrated needle threader; an automatic bobbin-winding mechanism.
  • Additional Features: Additionally, this deco embroidery machine has a twin-needle option, which is great for adding a touch of glamour to your projects! The most useful feature has to be the tension control, which is very easy to control and manipulate to your preference. Many tension control dials feel too slippery with minimal control- which wasn't the case with this one.

The Verdict

This deco embroidery machine is a great choice for people who'd like a good-quality, long-lasting machine, but are on a lower budget than the Brother FS100WT we mentioned earlier. This computerized sewing machine offers you twice as many stitch design options for enhanced variety, and pretty much the same range of features as the Brother.

[aawp fields="B08PZ621JB" value="thumb" image_size="large" image="3"]

Below is a quick overview of this machine:

  • 200 stitch designs to choose from
  • 8 one-step style buttonholes
  • Extra-large extendable table
  • 6 Presser Feet Types (quick-changing):  zipper foot, embroidery foot, buttonhole foot, button foot, zigzag, and blind stitch
  • Button controls: stop/start; reverse stitching; maximum stitch speed slider; needle positioning slider; tension control
  • LCD Display and controls: stitch width/length control; recommended presser foot; needle position; tension
  • Quick-set drop-in bobbin system
  • Free arm
  • Auto bobbin winding
  • Twin-needle design option
  • Integrated needle threader

The main flaw we noticed was that it seemed significantly lighter than many other high-end models, which usually an indicator of lower-quality (plastic). However, the build is smaller and it is designed to be a portable model, hence the materials used are specifically chosen to make this item lightweight.

If you're using this for commercial/professional use, then this is the perfect embroidery machine for you.

3) Uten Computerised 2685A Sewing and Quilting Machine

Next on our guide we've got another Uten machine, which pretty much went neck-and-neck for second place. The 2685A sewing and quilting machine is a slightly more affordable option for those of you who are interested in picking up one of the new, modern sewing machines out there.

[aawp fields="B07X8NQDJ8" value="thumb" image_size="large" image="1"]

This model is very similar to the previous one, just with some different standout feature additions.

Read on to see what we love about this machine.

What We Love

  • 200 Stitch Patterns: Like the original Uten sewing machine, the 2685A model also features 200 types of stitches to choose from to allow you to personalise your designs, including utility and decorative stitches. In traditional sewing machine options, you don't usually get a lettering function as they're an amazing feature mainly associated with commercial/luxury sewing machine brands- this model includes 100 letters and numbers for you to stitch with, including eight one-step buttonhole styles (auto-size), and various needle positions to choose from
  • Highly Convenient: Like the previous model, you get an informative LCD screen- except this one is larger. The screen allows you to select which stitch you'd like, allows for drop-feed quilting and sewing, as well as pivoting. The needle plate also comes set with an inch-based and centimetre-based scale. The buttons also allow you to both start and stop the machine, as well as position your needle upwards or downwards with memory

[aawp fields="B07X8NQDJ8" value="thumb" image_size="large" image="2"]

  • Easy to Use: Despite there being a multitude of settings and stitches to choose from, this type of machine/model is very easy to navigate and stitch with. You benefit from an automatic bobbin winding system and drop-in top bobbin system, an automatic needle threader, and a free arm to allow you to sew sleeves and cuffs.
  • Twin Needle and LED Station: In addition to single needle machines, these types of machines feature a twin-needle setting for the extra glam to your projects. Additionally, you can gain greater vision clarity with the LED-lit working station.
  • Variable Stitching: You can vary both the stitch length and width with these types of sewing machines- it's worth noting that the maximum sewing speed is around 700 per minute (±50). The length can be adjusted between 0-7mm, while the width between 0-4.5mm. There's also a speed control slider for you to set the speed you prefer, and a foot lift heigh of 5.5mm or less.

The Verdict

This embroidery machine is available online for around £240, but we purchase ours on Amazon for around £219. You get around about the same benefits as the previous model we mentioned, except with a little extra features to outweigh the budget materials used on this one.

[aawp fields="B07X8NQDJ8" value="thumb" image_size="large" image="3"]

Here's a quick overview on this machine:

  • 100 letters and numbers
  • 8 auto-size one-step buttonholes
  • Large LCD display
  • LED workspace light
  • Stitch speed slider + 700 stitches per minute maximum speed (±50)
  • Stitch length range: 0-7mm; Stitch width range: 0-4.5mm
  • Scaled needle plate
  • Automatic bobbin winding system; quick-set drop-in top bobbin system
  • Stop/Start buttons; needle position alternator

This machine feels slightly clunkier than the original model, but this is due to the cheaper build quality- but you are given a few extra handy features such as the needle plate scaling and LED light, so we think the price balances out well.

4) Brother AE1700 Sewing Machine

Fourth on this list is the Brother AE1700, which is a budget machine for anyone who's looking for a reliable, high-quality product, but won't be needing it for commercial or advanced project purposes. This compact, basic model is a great investment for you if you're starting out with embroidery or will be creating personal/small business projects.

[aawp fields="B00A4ARE5K" value="thumb" image_size="large" image="1"]

What We Love

  • 17 Stitch Designs: Despite being a more affordable model from a renowned brand, this sewing machine features 17 different stitch designs including utility and decorative; there's also a four-step buttonhole included in this model
  • High-quality build: This sewing machine looks and feels very compact, but it's heavier than you expect due to the sturdy, metal chassis. This makes this machine resistant to damage, but still suitable for domestic settings. Brother have even included a handy jam-proofing bobbin drop-in system that informs you of how much bobbin (thread) is left. There's also a handy LED light to indicate when fabric/thread colours aren't distorted.

[aawp fields="B00A4ARE5K" value="thumb" image_size="large" image="2"]

  • Easy to Use Controls: There are a few key controls integrated into this machine to help you make the most out of your investment, including- stitch selection (using a jog dial), a free arm (for sleeves and and cuffs), tension (using a dial located on the top), and a bobbin system

5) DONYER - POWER Mini Portable Machine

Finally on this list is the POWER mini portable machine by DONYER. This is perhaps the most convenient option for anyone who is going to use their machine for projects (college, for example)- or to practise on the go. It is extremely affordable with a good build quality, and enough feature-richness to take your embroidery habit on the road.

[aawp fields="B079249VZQ" value="thumb" image_size="large" image="1"]

What We Love

  • Highly Compact: This high-quality sewing machine is extremely portable thanks to the minute build, making it both lightweight and storable in even the tightest of spaces. Often, storing a sewing machine is a mission since they're usually quite large, but the POWER mini is excellent for this, making it storable in cupboards and on shelves
  • Feature-rich: Despite being tiny, this machine provides you with 12 stitch styles, two stitches-per-minute speeds, an integrated needle threader, stitch length/width adjustment, and even a free arm
  • Storage: This machine also offers an on-board/integrated accessory storage compartment, so you don't even need to buy a separate box or container for threads, needles, bobbins, or pins. The storage in this machine is able to accomodate all your accessories.
